Up to 8,000 PLN in funding for a rainwater tank. The Microretention Program, or "Mirek," is back in a new guise.

Water retention is becoming an increasingly important element of responsible property management. Long periods without rainfall, heavy downpours, and rising garden maintenance costs are leading more and more homeowners to seek practical ways to retain rainwater on their property.

The program is intended to respond to these needs Microretention, also referred to in the media as the program "Mirek"According to the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, the support is to be allocated to home rainwater collection and utilization systems. The maximum subsidy amount for individuals is to be 8 000 zł, and the level of funding — 90% of eligible installation costs.

What can you get funding for?

According to the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW), the funds can be allocated, among others, for the purchase, assembly, construction, expansion and commissioning of installations for:

  • collecting rainwater and meltwater from impermeable surfaces such as roofs, pavements, driveways,
  • storing rainwater in sealed tanks with a total capacity of at least 2 m³,
  • water retention in the ground, e.g. through soakaways, drainage, infiltration boxes or open tanks,
  • use of collected water, e.g. by pumps, sprinklers or water distribution centers.

This is important information for those planning to install a rainwater tank. In practice, it means that a well-planned system can not only reduce tap water consumption but also help manage rainfall without having to discharge it off-site.

Who will be able to benefit from the program?

According to information from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, individuals who are owners, co-owners, or perpetual users of real estate on which a building designated for residential purposes is located—permanently or temporarily—will be eligible to apply for funding. The grant will cover eligible costs incurred from 1 July 2024 year, with the proviso that it will not be possible to receive support for investment elements previously financed from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management or the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, e.g. from the "My Water" program.

Resident recruitment will be conducted by the provincial funds for environmental protection and water management. Therefore, before purchasing or installing a system, it's worth checking the curlease regulations in your province and the detailed program regulations once they're announced.

Why is it worth investing in a rainwater tank?

A rainwater tank is a solution that works well for single-family homes, larger properties, gardens, and commercial buildings. Collected rainwater can be used for watering plants, cleaning, washing garden tools, and powering selected garden installations, among other things.

A well-selected tank helps:

  • retain rainwater on the plot,
  • limit water flow into the storm sewer system,
  • reduce the risk of local flooding,
  • improve water availability during periods of drought,
  • reduce the consumption of water from the network when working in the garden.

However, it is important that the tank capacity, installation method and additional elements – such as filters, pumps, overflow systems and water distribution – are adapted to the roof area, user needs and technical conditions on the plot.

Gizo Tanks - help in choosing a solution

At Gizo, we take a practical approach to investment. We've been providing technical support for years, advising clients on solutions tailored to their actual operating and usage conditions. When it comes to rainwater tanks, it's not just the capacity itself that matters, but the entire system: the method of collecting water, the installation location, operational safety, expandability, and compliance with program requirements.

Therefore, when planning an investment, it is worth paying attention to several basic issues:

  • what surface of the roof or paved area we want to use to collect water,
  • what tank capacity will be optimal,
  • whether the tank is to be above ground or underground,
  • whether the system is to be used only for watering the garden or also for a wider use of water,
  • what additional elements will be needed for the proper operation of the installation.

The Microretention Program may be a good opportunity to plan such a subsidized investment. However, it's worth remembering that the final terms, deadlines, and formal requirements will depend on the regulations published by the relevant Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
